"We usually have two stressful times for deer:now (August) and January," Jenkins said. "By August everything is usually dry and crisp. But not Women Canada Goose Expedition Parka Pink Singapore now. There's plenty of foliage. Plenty of moisture. Plenty of food. The deer are not stressed. Rain is great for deer."

"But yeah, at the League we're all pretty excited about hunting season coming up."

Few factors affect hunters and hunting success more than weather, including, of course, rainfall. It has been a soaking wet summer. That will translate to both good and bad news for early season whitetail bow hunters.

The September goose hunt has a relatively small but dedicated following. Hunters have long requested that the season be moved to the second half of the month.

Hunters can expect a few regulation changes this year, including a shift in the September early Canada goose season. Dates for the early goose hunt are Sept. 16 30. It's usually in early or mid September.

17 hunting seasons on horizon around Kentucky and Indiana

"It will help with our research data," Jenkins said.

Dove, crow, purple and common gallinule and Virginia and sora rail seasons open Sept. 1.

Kentucky's 2016 17 hunting campaign begins Saturday, Aug. 20, when squirrel season opens. Many species, including squirrel, have a split season. For complete season dates, including bag/possession limits, check the current hunting and trapping guide and/or the guide for dove, early waterfowl, woodcock, snipe and crow. Regular waterfowl season dates, limits and regulations are still being finalized.

Deer managers are always tweaking with management schemes to benefit the game and the hunters who chase it. Generally speaking, the more information gathered, the better.

"Kentucky is becoming a destination state for many species," Dahl said.

Squirrel season opens first (the third Saturday of August is the traditional opener) and runs the longest (191 days through Feb. 28 with a two day hiatus for the opening weekend of modern gun deer season). But squirrels are hardly the only critters Kentucky hunters will be pursuing in the coming weeks.

State game officials were unclear on a precise definition for legal slingshot ammo.

Openers for rabbit, quail, grouse, bear, elk (quota only), bobcat, otter, mink, fox and more all arrive later. For the hunting community, it's somewhat an embarrassment of riches.

Mostly good; but first the bad:

For the 2016 17 whitetail campaign, deer zones have changed for Hardin, Webster and Marion counties. Hardin and Webster have gone from Zone 2 to Zone 1. Marion has moved from Zone 3 to Zone 2. All other county zones remain unchanged from last year.

Why the extra questions?

As summer grinds its way through August, dry, parched conditions usually emerge. In subdivisions, lawn sprinklers whirl day and night while lawnmowers fall silent; ponds begin to shrink; corn stalks start to curl. With no mast yet on the ground August can be a stressful time for deer. But not this year. The landscape is damp and green. That means flush conditions and plenty of food for deer and other critters

"Well, it's going to make deer harder to see, that's for sure," said Gabe Jenkins, the deer and elk program director for the state wildlife agency. "But rain is a great thing for deer."

Hunters who bag a deer will be asked to provide additional information when checking their animal this season. This season, in addition to the hunter's ID number, county code where the deer was taken, whether it's a buck or doe, the hunting tool used and the raft of other data required, hunters who check a buck will be asked for the total number of points 1 inch or longer and whether the antler spread is more or less than 11 inches.

Archery deer and bow turkey seasons arrives Sept. 3.

"The (September) goose shift is a big deal," Dahl said. "There should be more food available. And hopefully (the weather) will be a little cooler."

And finally, another long awaited regulation change: For 2016 17, it will be legal to use a slingshot to hunt small game. However, slingshots can only be used with "manufactured ammunition."
